LOS GATOS, California — June 23, 2004 — Audible Magic, a leading provider of content management services and anti-piracy solutions, announced today that Bellarmine College Preparatory, a Jesuit secondary school in San Jose, California, has purchased and installed the company’s CopySense Network Appliance. Designed for managing P2P traffic, the CopySense Network Appliance gives Bellarmine administrators a broadened range of latitude in determining P2P policy, from selectively filtering individual copyrighted works to blocking all P2P traffic on their network.
“With the CopySense appliance, I have the flexibility to either block all P2P traffic, log all P2P traffic, or block only that P2P traffic which is considered to be illegal by lawmaking bodies,” said Chris Cary, IT administrator at Bellarmine. “This device saves me a lot of time and energy as a system administrator since I no longer have to worry about illegal activities through P2P applications on our campus network.”
“P2P traffic was a concern for Bellarmine even though we have a firewall in place,” Cary continued. “Due to their port morphing capabilities, curtailing tricky programs like Kazaa requires either an application layer firewall or an intelligent device like the CopySense appliance.”
The installation at Bellarmine is a result of collaboration between Audible Magic and Extreme Networks, Inc., (NASDAQ:EXTR), a leader in broadband Ethernet networking solutions. Audible Magic recently joined Extreme Networks’ Go Purple Extreme Solution Partners® program. The program delivers an elite class of IP solutions for enterprises and service provider networks enabling customers to select from a range of industry-proven and compatible products.
“We took a close look at available solutions and found a powerful solution offered by Audible Magic,” said Varun Nagaraj, vice president of product management for Extreme Networks. “The CopySense Network Appliance is a very specific solution for a key network concern within the education market, and an excellent complement to Extreme’s own offerings.”
Installed as a “pass-by,” with no degradation in network performance, CopySense Network Appliance is easily managed via a web browser interface. The product has a unique ability to identity individual copyrighted songs, using Audible Magic’s patented digital fingerprinting technology, and the company’s massive reference database of nearly four million songs.
“The flexibility of CopySense Network appliance is a great benefit in the education market, which has many different segments with different requirements,” said Vance Ikezoye, Audible Magic’s founder and CEO. “Bellarmine is a good example of a school using it first to analyze P2P traffic, and then to implement an appropriate solution.”
Extreme Networks delivers the most effective applications and services infrastructure by creating networks that are faster, simpler and more cost-effective. Headquartered in Santa Clara, Calif., Extreme Networks markets its network switching solutions in more than 50 countries.
